Joe

Head Coach

Experience

Joe began swimming competitively at the age of eight. It wasn’t until college; under the tutelage of Terry Laughlin (the founder of Total Immersion) that Joe was able to unlock his potential. Terry emphasized proper technique over mindless yardage. Joe finished his swimming career at West Point as the record holder in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly.

Upon graduation from West Point, Joe served for five years in the United States Army, deploying to the Middle East in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon return home he moved to Colorado Springs where he trained with the Army’s World Class Athlete Program at Ft. Carson and Irvine, CA.

Coaching philosophy

As the head coach, Joe guides his coaching staff to emphasize technique at the beginning stages of swimming. He thinks it is critical to make sure kids have the fundamentals of basic body position and core body movement in all four competitive strokes. With proper technique at a young age, the kids will maintain their stroke integrity through periods of rapid growth and interest in other activities. He feels it is crucial to train all four strokes and not specialize at a young age.

Joe’s desire is to unlock the untapped potential of competitive swimmers through the teaching of proper technique – utilizing the latest advances in technology and research.

.Jen

Developmental Coach

Jen grew up in Denver, Colorado and has coached for Denver Youth Swimming and Diving (DYSD), as well as having coached the age group level and the Masters level at Denver University. She moved to Colorado Springs 10 years ago and has been coaching with CMA since that time. She really enjoys working with the younger swimmers and helping them develop their technique in each stroke. Jen has a great time with the kids and is loved by her swimmers.

Dixie

Developmental Coach

Dixie is a native of Salida and her coaching career began by swimming as a Cyclone from the age of 10-18. At the age of 18 she coached the Salida Cyclones seasonal team for 4 years until her

college graduation in 1993. At which time, Dixie continued to love the sport of swimming but lived in Alabama, where she taught swim lessons and was employed by Samford University to teach college students the basic skills to survive in water. Dixie returned to Salida with her husband in 2001 to raise a family and in 2004 was reacquainted with the Cyclones through her son joining the team. Dixie joined the coaching team in 2012 as an assistant and was recently selected as the new Head Coach for the Cyclones.

Dixie brings years of swimming knowledge and a love and passion for swimming to the Cyclones. Her philosophy is to teach good biomechanics with solid training, which includes open communication with swimmers and parents, training smarter and still having fun so each swimmer can reach his/her full potential in this sport. Dixie hopes to pass on her love of swimming to other children and help them succeed in and out of the water.

Simone
Developmental 1 and 2

Simone began swimming competitively at age 10. A non-Colorado native, she swam with clubs in Texas, North Carolina, and eventually here in Colorado, swimming with CMA for three years. Simone also swam during high school for Fayetteville Terry Sanford and Cheyenne Mountain. She started coaching with CMA in 2011. She is currently enrolled at UCCS in the Beth-El School of Nursing. She hopes to be graduating May 2015 and continue her work with children in the pediatric field. Simone love coaching D1 & D2? “Because it gives her the opportunity to make an impact and promote swimming for life.”

Diana

Developmental 1 and 2 and Masters

Diana started swimming while in college in Texas and was a member of a local Masters team. She discovered that her passion for swimming was greater than her passion for culinary arts. She joined CMA in the fall of 2011 and began working with D3 and the Masters team. Diana now coaches the D1 and D2 groups, and continues to work with the Masters group. She enjoys working with a variety of ages and helping everyone improve with their stroke technique, efficiency, and overall swimming ability. Diana has returned to college to pursue a degree in Sports Nutrition
